Shinjuku Health & Fitness Projects

~First step towards your healthy style with walking~

Project Overview (Background & Purpose)

Shinjuku City formulated ‘Shinjuku City Building Up Health Action Plan’ in 2018 in order to promote the act of building up physical health for the next five years.
We aim to create a town where everyone has a healthy life by uniting city residents, related organizations, and city government organizing the environment where people can pursue building up a healthy life style naturally without consciousness, and promoting fitness according to your life stage.
*Currently, the percentage of city residents who engage in physical activity which prevents lifestyle diseases* is low – just 39.3% for those between the ages of 18 and 64 (source: 2019 3rd Shinjuku City Administration Monitor Survey Report). It is necessary to establish strategies to increase the number of people who have the habits of exercising on a daily bases including walking with awareness and using staircases as much as possible, for the even current working generation, society.
In order to pursue this, we have implemented various walking related projects including the maintenance of a walking friendly environment for people to conduct exercise easier, and enable them to make “walking” as a habit in their daily lives.

*According to the “2013 Standard for Physical Exercise for Building Up Health” (Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare), doing physical exercise for 60 minutes per day for those from the age of 18 to 64 years old, and 40 minutes per day for those over 65 years old are effective for maintaining physical strength and preventing lifestyle diseases.

Reviews of Participants

Ikiiki Walk Shinjuku (2019)

  • The walk was short, making it easy to join in.

Comments from The Person in Charge

  • We tried to set up this event for all the participants to enjoy regardless of the level of the awareness of building up health and/or daily walking. We will continue to promote walking in order to prevent a lack of exercise during the outbreak of COVID-19.
